This is a short story I wrote for the indie anthology Future Sci-Fi Tales: Starfall. I wanted to play with the idea of humans crashing on an alien planet and what the reader normally expects from that type of story. My starting point was The Thing and what would be an anti-The Thing. It’s also about how a moment of miscommunication and highly stressful circumstances can lead to violence with terrible consequences. I see it as a sliding door moment for these characters, where if the circumstances were slightly different, perhaps with a bit more understanding, they could have been allies and friends.
Max’s art is incredible and I consider it a real privilege to have worked with him on this. I asked him if he wanted to do a Tsutomu Nihei art style, since we’re both huge fans, and he said yes and ran with it.
